Church
The Greek word is ekklesia (ἐκκλησία).
Meaning:
- Assembly
- Gathering
- Called-out ones
The church refers to those who have been called out of darkness and into God’s kingdom through faith in Jesus Christ.
The Universal Church
The universal church includes all true believers in Jesus Christ throughout the world.
Every person who has trusted in Christ belongs to the body of Christ.
Ephesians 4:4
“There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling.”
Regardless of nationality, language, or culture, all believers are united in Christ.
The Local Church
While all believers belong to the universal church, God also calls believers to participate in a local church.
A local church is a gathering of believers who:
- Worship together
- Learn God’s Word together
- Pray together
- Serve together
- Encourage one another
The New Testament consistently shows believers gathering regularly for worship and fellowship.
Why Every Believer Needs a Church Family
God never intended Christians to grow alone.
Just as a family provides support and care, the church provides spiritual support and encouragement.
Believers need:
- Biblical teaching
- Fellowship
- Accountability
- Prayer
- Encouragement
- Opportunities for service
