Session 02 — What Is Salvation?

The Gospel Message

The apostle Paul summarized the gospel clearly.

1 Corinthians 15:1-4

“That Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures.”

The gospel includes three essential truths:

Christ Died for Our Sins

Jesus took our place and bore the penalty of sin.

Christ Was Buried

His death was real and complete.

Christ Rose Again

His resurrection proves His victory over sin and death.

Without the resurrection there is no Christian faith.

The risen Christ is the foundation of our hope.

Grace and Forgiveness

One of the greatest truths in Scripture is that salvation is a gift of grace.

Ephesians 2:8-9

“For by grace you have been saved through faith…”

What Is Grace?

Grace is God’s undeserved favor shown toward sinners through Jesus Christ.

Grace means:

  • We do not earn salvation.
  • We do not deserve salvation.
  • We cannot purchase salvation.
  • God freely gives salvation through Christ.
