The Failure of Formation

Discussion Question

What does it mean to stay in step with the Spirit?

Answer

It means continually submitting our thoughts, actions, attitudes, and decisions to God’s leading through His Word and Spirit.

The Difference Between Living and Walking

Living in the Spirit

Living refers to the spiritual life that God gives through salvation.

  • Receiving new life through Jesus Christ
  • The work of God, not human effort
  • Regeneration or the new birth
  • Our position in Christ
  • Being made spiritually alive
  • The beginning of the Christian life
  • A gift received by grace through faith
  • The source of our relationship with God

Key Truth

We do not make ourselves alive spiritually—God gives us life through the Holy Spirit.

Ephesians 2:5

“Even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ.”

Walking in the Spirit

Walking refers to how we live after receiving spiritual life.

  • Daily obedience to God
  • Following the leading of the Holy Spirit
  • Growing in spiritual maturity
  • Practicing discipleship
  • Living out our faith in everyday life
  • Keeping in step with God’s direction
  • Producing the fruit of the Spirit
  • Continually surrendering to Christ
