The Failure of Formation

Galatians 5:25 — Living by the Spirit and Walking by the Spirit

Theme Verse

“If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.” — Galatians 5:25 (NKJV)

Opening Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the gift of salvation through Jesus Christ and for the life You have given us through Your Holy Spirit. As we open Your Word today, give us understanding, wisdom, and teachable hearts. Reveal areas where we may be relying on our own strength rather than walking in step with Your Spirit. Transform us from the inside out, that we may become more like Christ.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Opening Question (Icebreaker)

Think about a skill you learned in life, such as driving, playing an instrument, or learning a trade.

Question

What was the difference between knowing how something should be done and actually doing it consistently?

Introduction

One of the greatest dangers in the Christian life is confusing spiritual formation with spiritual transformation.

A person may learn Christian behavior, attend church regularly, gain biblical knowledge, and participate in ministry, yet fail to yield daily to the Holy Spirit.

Paul addresses this issue in Galatians 5:25 by distinguishing between living in the Spirit and walking in the Spirit.

Many believers understand receiving life from God, but fewer understand what it means to continually walk under His direction.

This is where formation often fails.
