Spiritual Birth Versus Physical Birth
Nicodemus misunderstood Jesus and thought He was speaking about physical birth.
Jesus explained the difference.
John 3:6
“That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.”
Physical Birth
Physical birth gives us:
- Physical life
- Human nature
- Life in this world
Every person has experienced physical birth.
Spiritual Birth
Spiritual birth gives us:
- New life in Christ
- A new relationship with God
- A new heart
- A new nature
- Eternal life
Spiritual birth is the work of God through the Holy Spirit.
The Difference Between Physical Birth and Spiritual Birth
Physical Birth
- Gives physical life
- Comes through human parents
- Produces a human nature
- Happens once at the beginning of earthly life
- Places us into a human family
Spiritual Birth
- Gives spiritual life
- Comes through the Holy Spirit
- Produces a new creation in Christ
- Happens when a person believes the gospel
- Places us into God’s family
Every person is physically born.
Every believer is spiritually born again.
