Coming out of the water symbolizes resurrection.
The believer identifies with Christ’s resurrection and new life.
Romans 6:4
“…even so we also should walk in newness of life.”
Baptism points to the transformation that has already occurred through salvation.
Public Identification with Christ
Baptism is a public declaration.
It tells the world:
- I belong to Jesus Christ.
- I believe the gospel.
- I am a follower of Christ.
- My life now belongs to Him.
Throughout history, baptism has been a visible way for believers to identify themselves with Christ and His people.
Baptism Does Not Save
This is an important biblical truth.
Salvation comes through faith in Christ alone.
Ephesians 2:8-9
“For by grace you have been saved through faith… not of works…”
Baptism is not:
- A means of earning salvation
- A religious work that removes sin
- A substitute for faith
Rather, baptism is the testimony of someone who has already trusted in Christ.
The water does not save.
Jesus saves.
