Baptism
The Greek word is baptizō (βαπτίζω).
Meaning:
- To immerse
- To dip
- To submerge
The word was commonly used for dipping or immersing something completely into water.
This is why Christian baptism has historically been practiced by immersion.
Why Are Believers Baptized?
Baptism is an act of obedience to Christ.
Jesus commanded His followers to baptize those who become His disciples.
Matthew 28:19-20
“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you…”
Notice the pattern:
- Make disciples.
- Baptize them.
- Teach them to obey Christ.
Baptism is part of the disciple-making process established by Jesus Himself.
What Baptism Represents
Romans 6 explains the symbolism of baptism.
Baptized into His Death
When a believer goes under the water, it symbolizes identification with Christ’s death.
The old life under the power of sin has been judged in Christ.
Buried with Him
Going beneath the water symbolizes burial.
Just as Christ was buried, the believer declares that the old life has passed away.
