What Is Sin?

Truth #4: Sin Is Rebellion Against God

At its core, sin is choosing our way instead of God’s way.

Isaiah 53:6

“All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way.”

The essence of sin is self-rule instead of God’s rule.

Truth #5: Sin Separates Us From God

Isaiah 59:2

“But your iniquities have separated between you and your God…”

Sin breaks fellowship with God.

The result is spiritual death and condemnation.

Biblical Example

Genesis 3:1-6

The first sin illustrates the nature of all sin.

Notice the progression:

Doubting God’s Word

“Yea, hath God said…?”

Desiring What God Forbade

The temptation appealed to personal desire.

Choosing Independence

Adam and Eve chose their own judgment over God’s command.

This pattern continues today.

Sin begins when people reject God’s authority and choose their own way.

Sin And Transgression

The Bible sometimes uses related but distinct terms.

Sin (Hamartia)

  • Missing the mark
  • Falling short of God’s glory
  • The fallen condition of humanity

Transgression (Parabasis)

  • Crossing a known boundary
  • Violating a revealed command
  • Deliberate disobedience
