What Is Sin?

Glory (Doxa)

The word glory refers to:

  • Excellence
  • Majesty
  • Honor
  • Splendor

When Paul says humanity falls short of God’s glory, he is saying humanity fails to reflect the character and holiness of God as originally intended.

What Does This Teach About Sin?

From Romans 3:23, we discover several foundational truths.

Truth #1: Sin Is Universal

No one is exempt.

Romans 3:10

“There is none righteous, no, not one.”

Every person stands guilty before God apart from Christ.

Truth #2: Sin Is Measured Against God

Sin is not measured by:

  • Society
  • Culture
  • Public opinion
  • Personal preference

Sin is measured against God’s holiness.

Truth #3: Sin Is More Than Wrong Actions

Sin includes actions.

But it also includes:

  • Thoughts
  • Motives
  • Desires
  • Attitudes

Jesus taught that sin originates in the heart.

Mark 7:21-23

“For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts…”

Sin is not merely external behavior.

Sin is an internal problem.
