WHAT IS SALVATION?

Teaching

The Bible begins by diagnosing humanity’s problem.

The greatest problem facing mankind is not politics, economics, education, disease, or social division.

The greatest problem is sin.

Sin entered the world through Adam’s rebellion and affected every part of human existence.

Because of sin:

  • Humanity is separated from God.
  • Humanity stands guilty before God.
  • Humanity experiences spiritual death.
  • Humanity cannot save itself.

Every attempt to solve humanity’s condition apart from God ultimately fails because it does not address the root problem.

Before salvation can be appreciated, sin must be understood.

People do not seek a Savior until they realize they need saving.

Discussion Questions

  • Why do you think many people do not recognize sin as humanity’s greatest problem?
  • How does society attempt to solve problems without addressing sin?
  • Why is it important to understand our need before understanding salvation?

Application

Spend time honestly examining your life before God.

Where do you see the effects of sin in the world around you and within your own heart?

2. The Meaning of Salvation

Scripture

Titus 3:5

“Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us…”

Teaching

Salvation is God’s work of rescue.

It is not humanity climbing up to God.

It is God reaching down to humanity.
