Nicodemus understood Jesus to mean a second physical birth.
Jesus was speaking about a birth that comes from above—a spiritual birth produced by God.
This is not self-improvement.
This is divine transformation.
“Kingdom”
John 3:3
The Greek word is:
βασιλεία (basileia)
Meaning:
- Kingdom
- Rule
- Reign
- Dominion
Jesus is speaking about entering and participating in the reign of God.
The new birth is necessary to truly see and enter God’s kingdom.
“Spirit”
John 3:5-6
The Greek word is:
πνεῦμα (pneuma)
Meaning:
- Spirit
- Breath
- Wind
Jesus compares the Holy Spirit to the wind.
The Spirit’s work may be invisible, but its effects are clearly seen in a transformed life.
Understanding the Passage
John 3:1-2
“There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.”
Nicodemus was religious, educated, and respected.
If religion alone could save, Nicodemus would not have needed anything else.
Yet Jesus pointed him to a deeper need.
