Why Is Forgiveness So Hard?

Forgiveness is difficult because it asks us to surrender something we naturally want to hold onto— the right to retaliate, to remain bitter, or to demand repayment for what cannot truly be repaid.

It is important to understand that forgiveness is not pretending the offense never happened. It is not minimizing evil. It is not approving what was done. Rather, forgiveness is entrusting the offense and its consequences to God, who sees perfectly and judges righteously.

This is why forgiveness often feels impossible.

Left to ourselves, it is.

But the good news of the gospel is that God never commands us to do something without also offering His grace to help us obey. The same God who forgives us through Christ is the One who strengthens us to forgive others.

You may not be ready to forgive completely today.

You may still have questions.

You may still carry anger, sadness, or confusion.

That does not mean you have failed.

Today, perhaps your first step is simply this:

To acknowledge that forgiveness is hard.

To stop pretending otherwise.

To bring your struggle honestly before God.

He is not disappointed by your weakness.

He meets you in it.

And what feels impossible today may become possible through His grace tomorrow.

Heart Reflection

  • What makes forgiveness difficult for you right now?
  • Is there a particular wound or relationship that immediately comes to mind?
  • What fears arise when you think about forgiving?
  • Can you honestly bring those fears before God?

Prayer

Father, You know the pain I carry and the struggles I rarely speak about. You know the people who have hurt me and the questions I wrestle with. Forgiveness feels difficult, and I confess that I do not always know how to move forward.

Help me to be honest with You about where I am. Give me the courage to face what I have been carrying and the grace to take the next step, even if it is small. Teach me to trust that You understand my pain and that You will walk with me through this journey.

I cannot do this in my own strength. I need Your help.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

A Step Toward Freedom

Finish this sentence in your journal:

“Forgiveness feels hard for me because…”

Do not edit your response. Do not give the “spiritual” answer you think you should say. Be honest with God. He already knows your heart.

Truth to Remember

You do not have to pretend forgiveness is easy for God to begin His work in you. Honest surrender is often the first step toward healing.
