What Forgiveness Is Not

Forgiveness is not reconciliation at any cost.

Scripture values reconciliation whenever possible, but reconciliation requires the participation of both people.

Paul writes:

“If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.”

— Romans 12:18

Sometimes reconciliation is possible.

Sometimes it is not.

Forgiveness releases your heart.

Reconciliation restores a relationship.

The two are not always experienced at the same time.

Most importantly, forgiveness is not surrendering yourself to continued harm.

God does not call you to remain in situations of abuse, manipulation, or danger under the guise of forgiveness.

Wisdom and boundaries are not evidence of unforgiveness.

They can be expressions of stewardship and truth.

Perhaps today you realize that you have resisted forgiveness because you feared what it would require of you.

You thought it meant forgetting.

You thought it meant trusting blindly.

You thought it meant pretending everything was fine.

But God has never asked you to deny the truth.

He invites you to release vengeance, entrust justice to Him, and walk forward in both grace and wisdom.

Understanding what forgiveness is not can remove unnecessary fear.

And sometimes, removing fear opens the door to freedom.
